SharePoint 2010 for Knowledge Management Practitioners

January 31 - February 2, 2012 (repeated on April 10 - 12, 2012)
11:00 to 1:00 pm Eastern time (8:00 am to 10:00 am Pacific), via teleconference

Because of its low cost, powerful capabilities, and end-user development features, SharePoint is becoming ubiquitous in corporate and government settings. To succeed, a SharePoint deployment needs careful planning to balance the need for enterprise consistency with the need for local flexibility. This workshop covers both high-level strategic issues and nuts-and-bolts how-to information that will enable knowledge managers to:

  • help cross-functional teams plan for SharePoint deployment;
  • create a governance framework and appropriate metrics;
  • create specific knowledge management applications, such as expertise location, search and discovery, Web publishing, and document management;
  • create a content migration and deployment strategy;
  • customize navigation and search;
  • manage and use metadata;
  • plan training and support services for content owners.

In addition to viewing each task step-by-step, you'll be able to download helpful reference documents and ask specific questions about your application in a small group setting.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
At the end of the workshop, you should be able to:

  • Identify content, users, and workflows for a specific SharePoint application;
  • Select a planning approach and governance model for your organization;
  • Decide where to store content;
  • Select a site template, authorize users, and add content for a specific application;
  • Create and use content types for content consistency;
  • Import and edit topic hierarchies and controlled vocabularies using the new Term Store Management Tool;
  • Create and use custom metadata elements in lists, libraries, navigation, document sets, and search;
  • Evaluate strategies for integrating external metadata repositories;
  • Design and implement a continuous improvement program for search.
