SharePoint 2013 for Knowledge Managers

Available on-site or via teleconference for groups of 6 or more

SharePoint 2013 has been available for almost a year. Of special interest to knowledge managers are changes in search, social networking, content and metadata management, and end-user development. The most significant additions are the integration of microblogging (i.e. Facebook-like) features, more control over names and synonyms, the integration of FAST search engine features, and an "app store" similar to that available to smart phone users.

This 6-hour workshop covers both high-level strategic issues and nuts-and-bolts how-to information that will enable knowledge management teams to:

  • plan to use new social networking features for more effective expertise management;
  • plan for new metadata management capabilities in the Term Store Management Tool;
  • plan for more effective search and discovery using new features such as web parts, query transformations refinements, search result customization, and search analytics;
  • learn how to use the "app store" for building knowledge management applications.

In addition to viewing each task step by step, you'll be able to download helpful reference documents and ask specific questions about your application in a small group setting.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
At the end of the workshop, you should be able to:

  • Identify key differences between SharePoint 2010 and 2013;
  • Assess the impact of SharePoint 2013 on information governance;
  • Decide when and how to use new site and page templates, such as product catalog page and community site;
  • Select a site template, authorize users, and add content for a specific application;
  • Import synonyms, manage company names, and manage spelling exclusions/inclusions;
  • Manage social networking "reputations;"
  • Add a refinement panel to category page;
  • Decide when and how to use search-driven web parts;
  • Use result type templates to conditionally change how search results are displayed;
  • Introduce new search features to users;
  • Identify and remedy organizational and issues that affect user productivity and return on the SharePoint investment.
