The Semantic Web in practice

September 22 - 24, 2009 via teleconference

11:00 am to 1:00 pm Eastern time (8:00 am to 10:00 am Pacific)

There are many sources of information on the Semantic Web. Most are either future-oriented presentations short on implementation details, technical discussions heavy on jargon aimed at Ph.D.'s in computer science, or events that focus on a specific vendor or product. While these serve a purpose, there's also a need for practical, down-to-earth details on how ontologies and the Semantic Web are being used to save time and money within the enterprise and among business partners.

In this nuts-and-bolts, vendor-neutral series, you will learn how to use the Semantic Web to reduce content management costs, produce better management reports, and enhance search. You'll hear how the staff at O'Reilly Media tell how and why they're using it to reduce publishing costs and lead times, and you'll learn how to take a simple Excel taxonomy and convert it via a relational database into a Semantic Web standard format.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
At the end of the seminar, you should be able to:

  • Identify the business drivers for the Semantic Web in a corporate setting;
  • Understand the strengths and weaknesses of two approaches to implementation;
  • Select the appropriate Semantic Web standards for your application;
  • Understand the non-technical work necessary to implement the Semantic Web;
  • Identify and evaluate tools and services for creating and searching Semantic Web data;
  • Create a roadmap for migrating metadata from simple spreadsheets structures to usable Semantic Web formats.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS SEMINAR
This seminar is designed for Web site publishers, content owners, knowledge managers, technical writers, e-commerce managers, editors and others who want to learn how to enhance and compliment MOSS 2007 search and navigation.

SEMINAR FORMAT
The seminar is conducted via telephone and Webex. If you can't use Webex, you can view the presentations on your own computer. Resources materials are accessible via a password-protected Web site.
