Metadata & search workshop
October 4, 2006
9:00 am - 4:00 pm, The MITRE
Corporation, McLean VA

retrieval for collaboration roundtable at the same location on October
3.
Search engines have improved over the last 10 years,
but for many applications they still serve up too many irrelevant items.
One way to make them "smarter" is to use taxonomies and metadata.
In this workshop, you will learn how to create and maintain metadata structures
(taxonomies) and expose them for use by a metadata-aware search engine.
This workshop serves as an introduction to the hands-on
Metadata and search
course.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
The workshop will cover the following topics:
• 5 ways that metadata can enhance the search
function;
• what kinds of metadata are most important
for searching;
• the pros and cons of storing metadata in
documents vs. an external repository;
• how to export an XML thesaurus for search;
• how to create a topic hierarchy, a "bread
crumb trail," and a "Best Bets" feature;
• how to use a metadata repository to submit
searches to external search engines (e.g. Google) and Web sites;
• what you can learn from search engine statistics;
• how to make it easier for authors to enter
metadata into their documents;
• how to re-purpose metadata to create navigation
tools (e.g. A - Z indexes, glossaries, bibliographies) that compliment
search.
The workshop will draw on the instructor's experience
in creating the Montague Institute's taxonomy and A
- Z index and using that metadata to customize site search.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This course is designed for Web site publishers, content owners,
knowledge managers, technical writers, e-commerce managers, editors, taxonomists
and others who want to learn how to enhance and complement the full text
search function. We recommend that at least one
person from an interdisciplinary team attend the face
to face session, with others from IT, information services, or publishing
attending via teleconference (see Workshop Fee below).
FORMAT
The format is face-to-face on site at The MITRE Corporation in McLean,
Virginia.
HANDS-ON FOLLOW-UP COURSE
To see how your own metadata performs in a live
search application and get personalized help in creating a search taxonomy,
your team can take the follow-up Metadata
and search course either on site
at your location or via teleconference and the Web. This course includes
a series of Metadata & search exercises
in which metadata from your worksheets is imported into a metadata repository
for easy maintenance and use by other applications.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Jean Graef, Montague Institute founder, is a "boundary
spanner" with an interdisciplinary background as a manager, entrepreneur,
librarian, programmer, and journalist. She has been developing and conducting
seminars on cutting edge information topics since the early 1980's.
