Roundtable

Knowledge transfer in extranets

October 24, 2000

Knowledge transfer in a multi-company or multi-cultural environment raises new management issues and introduces greater technical complexity. But the potential benefits are compelling – enhanced ability to respond to opportunities, better customer service, and lower transaction costs. In this roundtable, we’ll discuss how to manage knowledge flows among partners in business-to-business extranets and e-commerce networks. See also previous roundtables.

The Society of Knowledge Base Publishers will hold a one-day roundtable at the Cleveland office of Deloitte & Touche, LLP on October 24, 2000, to provide a forum in which participants can share information on this topic. This is not a training session, but an idea exchange for experienced practitioners.

DISCUSSION TOPICS

  • How do you identify the intellectual assets of partners and potential partners?

  • How do partners assess the value of their individual contributions and allocate the benefits?

  • How do you capitalize on the strengths and minimize the frictions inherent in different cultures?

  • What are successful models for sharing or distributing both internal and external information among partners? How do you select the model most appropriate for your industry or culture?

  • How do you define "security" in relation to e-commerce partners? How do you implement different permissions and access levels?

  • What is the role of taxonomy in the flow and application of intellectual assets? How do you create and maintain a classification scheme that serves the needs of all e-commerce participants?

  • How do you allocate or dispose of intellectual assets when participants leave the e-commerce network?

  • How do you negotiate with external vendors when more than one company is involved in the purchase of information products and services?

  • How do you design a system that will be equally accessible to both large and small companies?

  • What should information services managers do now to prepare for their firm’s participation in an extranet or e-commerce network?

  • What new third-party services are available to facilitate knowledge flows across extranets?
