Primer + Roundtable

Demonstrating taxonomy value to senior managers

February 20, 2008

See also Selling taxonomy: A blind alley?

Jie-hong Morrison is a taxonomy and search engine consultant for Computer Technologies Consultants, Inc. She has been developing Web-based applications for private, state, and federal government sectors since 1996.

How do corporate taxonomists "sell" business unit managers, senior executives, and authors on the value of what they do? Often the best way is a "show and tell" session with a before and after demonstration using data from a business critical application.

In this primer/roundtable, Montague Institute founder Jean Graef will show how concepts from IT, library science, and corporate publishing can be used to communicate taxonomy benefits to different stakeholder groups. She will also summarize the experiences of Society members in selling taxonomy to their management.

In the second part of the session, Jie-Hong Morrison of Computer Technologies Consultants and Luigi Canali of Canali, Inc. will show examples of successful demonstrations they've used in a multi-year search project for an Executive Branch federal agency. The project integrates taxonomy data with the Google Search Appliance and the agency's content management system.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This event is for practitioners only. Space is limited to permit everyone's active participation. Software vendors and systems integrators are welcome to attend but only in their role as practitioners.

This session will be of interest to corporate taxonomists, knowledge managers, search system administrators, Web publishers, information architects, and business unit managers who want to improve their staff's productivity.

DISCUSSION TOPICS
Our members have indicated an interest in discussing the following questions and topics. Participants are encouraged to ask additional questions during the session.

• What kind of data do you need for a convincing taxonomy demo and where/how do you get it?

• What are the logistics of creating an effective taxonomy demo? What can you expect from search engine and related vendors (e.g. commercial information services, taxonomy management systems)?

• Which taxonomy application demos are most effective — enterprise search, department search, content management, or end-user workflow? Or is it best to demo a combination of applications?

• What factors in the corporate culture should you consider when designing a taxonomy demo? How do you address the interests of different stakeholder groups?

• How does your method of selling a taxonomy-related project influence the metrics used to evaluate ROI when the project is completed? If so, how?

• Assuming you've sold management on a taxonomy project, how do you deal with the rapid pace of technology change? Do you demonstrate new ideas as soon as they come up or wait until the current phase of the project is completed?

• Who should be involved in creating and presenting a taxonomy demonstration? How do you identify your allies in the organization, and how best can you use them?

• How much time/money/staff is needed to create an effective demo for using a taxonomy to enhance search, reduce content management costs, and increase end-user productivity on the desktop? How do you get the taxonomy demo effort funded?

FORMAT
The format is teleconference. Participants will receive a list of attendees, a password to access a list of members-only background articles on the Montague Institute Web site, and a toll-free phone number to join the teleconference.
