Enterprise mashups for expertise location

January 17, 2008

A mashup is a web application that combines data and functionality from more than one source into a single integrated tool. In the enterprise, mashups can empower user-driven innovation at the level of individuals, workgroups, and departments.

In this primer/roundtable, Jean Graef will provide a brief tutorial on mashups and describe other expertise location techniques discussed in previous roundtables. In the second part of the session, Qin Zhu of HP Labs will describe her experience in creating a mashup called the "Technical Report Context Viewer" that combines a list of internal technical reports with company directory data.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This event is for practitioners only. Space is limited to permit everyone's active participation. Software vendors and systems integrators are welcome to attend but only in their role as practitioners.

This session will be of interest to corporate taxonomists, knowledge managers, search system administrators, Web publishers, information architects, and business unit managers who want to improve their staff's productivity.

DISCUSSION TOPICS
Our members have indicated an interest in discussing the following questions and topics. Participants are encouraged to ask additional questions during the session.

• When are mashups preferable to commercial programs or IT-initiated programs?

• If the mashup creator does not "own" either the content or the functionality, what are the best ways to keep data fresh and functions current? Failing that, what should be done to alert users that data needs to be "refreshed?"

• Are copyright and licensing issues an obstacle for mashups? If so, how do you deal with them?

• How do users respond to information discover, search, and retrieval mashups?

• What are the major usability issues with mashups and how do you address them?

• Since mashups are a key enabler of end-user innovation, how should information professionals educate, support, and guide mashup creators at the work group and department level?

• Who will manage mashups in the enterprise and how?

• What resources are required for mashup creation in time, money, and staff?

• Are there any "killer enterprise mashup demos" and where do you find them?

FORMAT
The format is teleconference. Participants will receive a list of attendees, a password to access a list of members-only background articles on the Montague Institute Web site, and a toll-free phone number to join the teleconference.
