Roundtable

Six weeks to the Semantic Web

November 7, 2007

Many of us see the potential of the Semantic Web for search, navigation, and electronic commerce. But how do we explain such an abstract concept to managers so as to get funding approval for real world applications?

In this roundtable, Kevin Lynch and Christine Connors describe a pilot project on expertise location to show the power of the Semantic Web in a business environment. With a timetable of only six weeks, Kevin and Christine had to decide which tools to use, what data to integrate, and how to show business value. What they learned along the way can save you time and money.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This event is for practitioners only. Space is limited to permit everyone's active participation. If you have limited familiarity with RDF and the Semantic Web, you can take the pre-roundtable primer on November 6. Software vendors and systems integrators are welcome to attend but only in their role as practitioners.

This session will be of interest to corporate taxonomists, knowledge managers, search system administrators, Web publishers, information architects, and business unit managers who want to improve their staff's productivity.

DISCUSSION TOPICS
Our members have indicated an interest in discussing the following questions and topics. Participants are encouraged to ask additional questions during the session.

• How can you tell that your organization might be ripe for Semantic Web applications?

• For quick results on your pilot project, how do you select a business problem appropriate for the Semantic Web?

• What are the pros and cons of various tools that allow you to convert existing data stores and edit the results in Semantic Web format?

• What are "screen scraping" and "mashups," and when do you need to use them?

• What kinds of data resources should you consider when designing your Semantic Web pilot?

• How do you design your pilot to "sell" the concept of semantics to different kinds of audiences?

• How can the Semantic Web enhance enterprise search?

• What kinds of user interface issues arise in applying the Semantic Web, and how do you resolve them?

FORMAT
The format is teleconference. Participants will receive a list of attendees, a password to access a list of members-only background articles on the Montague Institute Web site, and a toll-free phone number to join the teleconference.
