Roundtable

Migrating metadata to the Semantic Web

September 5 , 2007

See also Best practices for search systems

Sooner or later, many Web sites need metadata relationships that go beyond the basics — controlled vocabularies, topic hierarchies, and thesauri. For example, documents and subject terms are usually associated with an implied is about relationship (i.e. document A is about solar energy). For some applications, however, it might be necessary to add other kinds of associations, such as was reviewed by or was sold to.

The metadata structure needed to implement these new relationships is called the Semantic Web. The concept has been around for several years, but real world applications in business are still hard to find, partly because many companies see it as a competitive advantage and don't want to talk about it.

In this roundtable, Barbara McGlamery of Time Interactive will tell how her team used a Semantic Web standard called RDF (Resource Description Framework) to add new kinds of relationships to enhance search and navigation on the Entertainment Weekly Web site.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This event is for practitioners only. Space is limited to permit everyone's active participation. If you have limited familiarity with RDF and the Semantic Web, you can take the pre-roundtable primer on September 4. Software vendors and systems integrators are welcome to attend but only in their role as practitioners.

This session will be of interest to corporate taxonomists, knowledge managers, search system administrators, Web publishers, information architects, and business unit managers who want to improve their staff's productivity.

DISCUSSION TOPICS
Our members have indicated an interest in discussing the following questions and topics. Participants are encouraged to ask additional questions during the session.

• What is the business case for implementing the Semantic Web?

• What Semantic Web features are commonly added to existing taxonomies?

• What planning steps are needed to minimize costs and time delays in migrating to a Semantic Web metadata structure?

• What's typically included in a Semantic Web (ontology) functional specification?

• What specific taxonomy issues are likely to arise during migration and how do you resolve them?

• What's the best way to map metadata values in the old structure to corresponding values in the new structure?

• Once you have a Semantic Web metadata structure, how do you deploy it on the Web to save time for users?

• What resources are necessary in terms of time, staff, and tools?

• How do you measure the benefits of the completed migration?

FORMAT
The format is teleconference. Participants will receive a list of attendees, a password to access a list of members-only background articles on the Montague Institute Web site, and a toll-free phone number to join the teleconference.

COST
$400 per person (members), $650 per person (nonmembers). Nonmembers who register for this roundtable automatically become members of the Society of Knowledge Base Publishers.

Additional people from the same team can attend at a reduced rate of $325 (includes full Society membership).
