MOSS 2007, taxonomies, & search

April 26, 2007

Paul Rosenberg

MOSS 2007, the new version of Sharepoint, is supposed to have substantially improved search capabilities. How does it live up to its promises? Can Sharepoint search be enhanced by adding taxonomies? If so, how is it done?

In this roundtable, Paul Rosenberg, an intranet search specialist at a casualty insurance companyy will share his experiences in using MOSS 2007, compare the search capabilities of the old version (Windows Sharepoint Services and Sharepoint Portal Services) and the new version, and describe a pilot project to integrate an extract of the Wordnet taxonomy.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This event is for practitioners only. Space is limited to permit everyone's active participation. If you have limited familiarity with selecting and customizing search engines, you can take the pre-roundtable primer on April 25. Software vendors and systems integrators are welcome to attend but only in their role as practitioners. In other words, they must use collaboration technology internally and be willing to discuss their experiences with it.

This session will be of interest to corporate taxonomists, knowledge managers, search system administrators, Web publishers, information architects, and business unit managers who want to use Sharepoint for work group collaboration, content management, or document management.

DISCUSSION TOPICS
Our members have indicated an interest in discussing the following questions and topics:

• How is MOSS 2007 different from Windows Sharepoint Services and Sharepoint Portal Services?

• How does the search function compare in the new version and the old version?

• How do search requirements vary according to the application? For example, does project management have the same requirements as content or document management?

• What are the new capabilities for searching line-of-business applications (such as PeopleSoft human resources applications)?

• What are the search implications of tighter integration with Microsoft Office? Does searching across the enterprise, the work group, and the individual desktop work consistently?

• What is the value of using taxonomies with MOSS 2007? How are external taxonomies implemented?

• How does MOSS 2007 deliver enhanced productivity? What are the pros and cons of upgrading from the current version of Sharepoint to the new version?

FORMAT
The format is teleconference. Participants will receive a list of attendees, a password to access a list of members-only background articles on the Montague Institute Web site, and a domestic toll-free phone number to join the teleconference (international conference calls are not toll-free).
