Roundtable: Good to great search
January 17 , 2007
11:00 am - 2:00 pm (Eastern), 8:00 am - 11:00
am (Pacific) via teleconference
If you're in the market for a new search engine (or would like
to get better performance from your existing product), this roundtable
is for you. Walter Underwood will discuss the pros and cons of popular
search engines, offer practical tips about how to
get maximum performance from your current search engine, and answer all
your search engine questions.
FEATURED GUEST
In this 3-hour teleconference roundtable, Walter will draw
on his experience with H-P, Sun, Boeing, the IRS, Merck, the State of Minnesota,
Schlumberger and other organizations to discuss the pros and cons of search
engine products,
such as Ultraseek, Google Search Appliance, Verity K2, Autonomy IDOL, and open
source options such as Lucene and Apache Solr.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This event is for experienced practitioners. If you have limited
familiarity with selecting and customizing search engines, you
can take the
pre-roundtable primer on January 16. Software
vendors and systems integrators are welcome to attend but only in their
role as practitioners. In other words, they must be willing to discuss
their own internal practices.
DISCUSSION TOPICS
The following is a preliminary list of issues
that Walter will address. Additional topics and questions
may be added by participants during the session.
• What do you do at Netflix, and what are
your current priorities there?
• How do search requirements differ
at e-commerce Web sites like Netflix versus public corporate Web
sites and intranets?
• What should people look for when shopping
for a search engine? What key questions should they ask vendors?
• What kinds of things should a search engine
consultant be able to do for you? What kinds of things shouldn't you
ask them to do?
How much should you expect to pay?
• What are the top 5 search engine tweaks
in terms of boosting performance?
• What are the pros and cons of using taxonomies
and metadata to improve the user's search experience?
• Should the search function be managed by
a separate group of people? If so, what kinds of people should be included
and what should be their charter?
• What are the most common pitfalls in selecting
and implementing search engines?
• Where is the search engine market headed?
What should organizations be doing to protect their "findability" investment
in the face of industry consolidation and technology change?
