Valuing knowledge services
June 13, 2006
9:00 am - 4:00 pm, The MITRE Corporation, Bedford,
Massachusetts
See also "Metadata
and search" seminar at the same location on June 14 and "Manage
services, not content or technology" (Montague Institute
Review).
How do you explain fuzzy concepts like "knowledge
management" and abstractions like "ontology" to non-IT
managers in cost/benefit terms? How do you attract sufficient resources
to do innovative projects? How do you get business unit managers to share
the responsibility for formulating and applying metadata standards and
creating high quality content?
Service portfolio management may make it easier to
demonstrate your value, prioritize your services, and strengthen your
relationship with users and business unit managers. In this roundtable,
we'll hear from two people — one from IT and the other from knowledge
services — who have implemented service portfolio management in
their organization. The remaining time will be spent sharing ideas about
how we should define our role, measure our performance, and participate
in funding decisions.

ROUNDTABLE HOST
In this 6-hour face-to-face roundtable, Betsy Cogliano and Joel Jacobs
of The MITRE Corporation will explain how service portfolio management
evolved in their organization and how it is being used to communicate
services to information customers.
Joel Jacobs is MITRE's acting CIO and Betsy Cogliano
manages several knowledge services, which include communities and team
support, information retrieval and delivery, and content management. MITRE
is a not-for-profit corporation that manages three federally-funded research
and development centers (FFRDCs) in support of government sponsors.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This event is for practitioners only. Software vendors and systems
integrators are welcome to attend but only in their role as practitioners.
In other words, they must be willing to discuss their own management practices.
DISCUSSION TOPICS
The following is a preliminary list of discussion
topics. Additional topics may be added by participants during the session.
• What is the scope of your planning for knowledge
services: entire enterprise, industry or geographic focus, strategic
business unit, department or function?
• How do you define and categorize knowledge
projects and services in your organization? Is there an enterprise-wide
consensus on what the categories mean and how they relate to strategic
goals?
• What time scale do you use when planning
and budgeting for knowledge services: a month, a year, five years or
longer? How often do you monitor progress? What happens when you need
to take corrective action?
• How many of your resources (time, money,
people) are devoted to maintenance or defensive activities (i.e. keep
up with competition) vs. offensive activities (i.e. transform how business
is done)? Do you have a group devoted exclusively to innovation?
• Do you have a formal structure for deciding
which knowledge services get funded? Who's involved? How do you educate
the non-IT participants about your area of expertise? How do they educate
you about business needs?
• How do you plan to tailor your services to
support such trends as service-oriented architecture, the "information
workplace," and end user development?
