Dollars & cents of KM: The DuPont Legal Model story
November 17, 2005
This roundtable discussion, sponsored
by the Society of Knowledge Base Publishers,
will be held on November 17, 2005, in teleconference format. Jean
Graef, Montague Institute founder, will serve as moderator.
Featured guests are Marybeth Davies,
Paralegal Manager, and Pam Martin, IT Manager, for DuPont
Legal Model. They will discuss their experiences with corporate programs
to manage legal costs and work more effectively with external law firms.
For details on what this really means, both to the corporate client and
its professional services suppliers, see "Tiny
firm prospers paring fees DuPont's way."
As a bonus, Jean Graef will summarize
her interviews with Ramona Romero, DuPont Legal Model's Manager of Law
Firm Partnering, and many of the law firms and suppliers in DuPont's network.

- a knowledge management initiative in a law firm
or professional services firm;
- a content management, document management, or knowledge
management initiative in a corporate legal department;

DISCUSSION TOPICS
The following is a list of proposed discussion
topics. Additional topics can be suggested by the participants during
the roundtable session.
— Why are large corporations looking to change
the way they do business with external law firms?
— How do these new kinds of partnerships work?
What are the key components of the programs? What are the results?
— What internal changes does the corporation
need to make to participate in a preferred provider network? What's
the best way to effect the changes?
— How do companies select the law firms, service
providers, and consultants in the preferred provider network? What changes
do providers need to make? What supporting services and incentives should
companies offer network members?
— What collaboration technologies are needed?
How do participants handle security and privacy issues? What is the
technology investment required?
— How are paralegals affected? What kind of
training and incentives need to be in place for them?
— What role should law librarians and law firm
CIO's play in setting up and operating a preferred provider network?
— What benefits did DuPont achieve from its
partnership program? What factors determine whether other organizations
can achieve similar results? Will the model work for other kinds of
professional services firms (e.g. accounting, consulting, and systems
integration firms)?
