Roundtable

Denise Bedford on Metadata & Enterprise Architecture

June 22, 2005

This roundtable discussion, sponsored by the Society of Knowledge Base Publishers, will be held on June 22, 2005. Jean Graef, Montague Institute founder, will serve as moderator. As guest presenter, Denise Bedford will bring us up to date on her work at the World Bank, Georgetown University, Catholic University, and KM.gov.

Denise has years of hands-on experience developing enterprise architectures and metadata repositories. She has helped to draft specfiications and evaluate software tools for search, metadata extraction, document summarization, and categorization. She's great at bridging the gaps between library science and IT — from the big picture to the nuts and bolts. Her previous appearances at our roundtables and seminars have gotten rave reviews.

This is not a training session. It's a discussion forum for experienced practitioners. We recommend that you have taken one or more of the Montague Institute taxonomy courses (Creating and using business taxonomies, Integrating taxonomies, or Information modeling) or have experience with taxonomy creation and metadata management.

DISCUSSION TOPICS
At this roundtable, Denise will share her experiences in:

— Using linguistic tools such as thesauri to further knowledge management objectives, such as leveraging intellectual assets and promoting information sharing

— Using software to extract metadata from documents in multiple languages

— Selecting and customizing enterprise search engines for large, complex Web sites

— Integrating the search function with metadata embedded in documents or extracted from a "metadata gateway"

— Developing a search architecture that works for multiple languages

— Designing an efficient method of storing the major types of metadata: e.g. content types, topics, business processes, and core (common) metadata

— Developing cost effective ways of keeping taxonomies and metadata up to date by striking a balance between human editing and computer processing

— Using software to develop controlled vocabularies

— Developing strategies that help users determine the context of terms (e.g. "mobility" in health care vs. "mobility" in transportation)

— Making it possible for users to discover whether information is available on a certain topic, but restrict access to it based on their security profile.

— Dealing with political issues through architecture, governance, and training
