Here's a chance to pick the brains of a recognized expert with extensive experience in organizing information for corporate intranets and developing classification-related products and services. Joyce Ward, formerly VP of Classification and Editorial Services at Northern Light, will share her experiences in this roundtable discussion, the second in the "Advanced Taxonomy Topics" series. This one-day event, sponsored by the Society of Knowledge Base Publishers will be held at the Radisson Hotel in Enfield, CT, on December 4, 2001. This is not a training session, but an idea exchange for experienced practitioners and content managers. Joyce will talk about how her team created the taxonomy behind Northern Light's Custom Search Folders, and how she helped customize taxonomies for Northern Light's corporate clients. She will also discuss her prior experience in developing "bibliographic utilities" at Digital Equipment Corporation and consulting with a variety of corporate clients on information management issues. DISCUSSION TOPICS -- What are the most important lessons you've learned in creating and maintaining taxonomies? -- How can taxonomies help reduce "clutter" in search results? -- What are the pros and cons of using an external vendor to create and maintain a corporate taxonomy? -- In a "human-directed automatic classification process," what tasks should humans do and what tasks should computers do? -- How many humans are really needed to maintain a high quality taxonomy? Are there rules of thumb for how much to allocate to the taxonomy function? -- What are recommended best practices for integrating internal and external content in a taxonomy? -- How can companies get more value from the classification capabilities of commercial content management systems? How much should companies be spending to create and maintain the classification component of these systems? -- What taxonomy-related skills do employees need?
