Roundtable

Google vs. Autonomy vs. Sharepoint

June 18 , 2008

See also Google vs. Autonomy

Recent consolidation in the search engine market plus the explosive growth of Microsoft's Sharepoint platform have caused many organizations to rethink their strategies for enterprise search and related applications. One vendor claims that its products can do almost anything, but what at what cost in terms of cash outlay and staff time? Another stresses easy installation and gets a boost from its brand recognition, but how well can it meet the special requirements of a global company? A third touts low cost and integration with office productivity applications, but how well does it use existing metadata repositories and how much will customization cost?

In this roundtable, Jean Graef of the Montague Institute will report on her organization's test of MOSS 2007 (Sharepoint) search and navigation functions. Then, Jim Smith, a member of the search evaluation team of a global manufacturing organization, will describe the results of a recent Proof of Concept test between Google and Autonomy.

• What kinds of tests were performed?

• What were the criteria used to evaluate each product?

• How do each of the three vendors handle special requirements, such as security, multiple languages, metadata management and deployment, integration with other applications?

• How do each of the three vendors price their products?

• Are third-party add-on products desirable? If so, why?

• What are the "soft" costs involved in terms of installation, ongoing maintenance, training, and customization?
