Although the current version of Sharepoint search is a great improvement over earlier versions, it still lacks some important features. Although it is possible to add additional features through programming, many organizations prefer to acquire third-party software products that are Sharepoint-compatible.
In this roundtable, Marcia Morante, a freelance taxonomist currently working with a major financial services firm, describes her experience with Ontolica, a Sharepoint add-on from search engine vendor Mondosoft.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This event is for practitioners only. Space is limited to permit everyone's active participation. Software vendors
and systems integrators are welcome to attend but only in their role as
practitioners.
This session will be of interest to corporate taxonomists, knowledge managers, search system administrators, Web publishers, information architects, and business unit managers who want to improve their staff's productivity.
DISCUSSION TOPICS
Our members have indicated an interest in discussing
the following questions and topics. Participants are encouraged to ask additional questions during the session.
• Why are organizations implementing MOSS 2007? Are there some situations where Sharepoint search works better than others?
• What features are lacking in Sharepoint search? Which ones seem to be most important to large organizations?
• What kinds of third-party products are available to enhance Sharepoint search? How much do they cost?
• Where are third-party products most valuable: enterprise portals, department/division Web sites (Sharepoint site collections), team sites, or all three?
• How much customization and tweaking do third-party products require? How difficult is it to get them working smoothly with Sharepoint search?
• Can any of the third-party products accommodate a true thesaurus (with broader/narrower terms and related terms)?
• How long does it take to implement MOSS 2007 with a third-party product? Who should be involved? What kind of planning is necessary?
• What kinds of reports are available, and what do they show about the cost/benefit of MOSS 2007 search?
