How to find a thesaurus

Original inquiry and summary posted by Dave Hook, Nortel Networks, on May 25, 1999

I need to find a good thesaurus/list of subject headings for science and technology (particularly telecommunications and networks). I am looking for something along the lines of Krieger's subject headings for law - complete with BT's, NT's, RT's etc. Due to the nature of the industry, it would have to something published fairly recently. Can anyone offer any suggestions that they use? On-line sources would also be useful. Please send responses to me directly and I will summarize the results to the group.

ABI Inform's vocabulary is good. You might try this site: American Society for Quality (ASQ) and the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award site.

IEEE has a thesaurus.

The first thing that comes to mind is the INSPEC Thesaurus. Among other subjects, INSPEC (a bibliographic database) covers computer science and telecommunications. Go to the INSPEC Thesaurus.

-- Donna E Cromer, University of New Mexico

The best thesauri would probably be the INSPEC Thesaurus (from IEEE, the makers of the INSPEC database), the Engineering Thesaurus (from Engineering Information, the producers of Compendex), and the NASA Thesarus (from NASA's Scientific and Technical Information group). The latter is searchable on the web and can be purchased for a nominal fee. I'm certain that the others can probably be acquired in electronic format as well, but I'm not sure of the details.

The INSPEC thesaurus would probably be the best choice for telecommunications or networking. Also, a search on the Librarians' Resource Centre (brought to you by SLA Toronto!) finds the following: Dictionaries, Thesauri, & Glossaries. Meta list of dictionaries from the Michigan Electronic Library
