How to find plant locations
Another way to find plant locations is to call the company directly. I've had pretty good luck with that. You may have to call back several times and find different people in various departments to talk with. You might try the trade association of whatever industry you're tracking. I know the EIA/CEMA Research Center collects plant site data on electronics companies. You can reach them at 703-907-7753.
I've found these to be the best sources so far: D&B Industrial Guide (lists plant locations and managers) Harris Manufacturing Directories (available from them on CD and through Technology Registry, an online service based in San Francisco) If you are looking in a particular industry, there are some association directories available too.
American Business Directory might point you to some plant locations. I've used the CD-ROM version and found that it sometimes lists individual plant locations (but not necessarily all of them). It's also in Dialog as file 531.
Finding plant locations is VERY difficult. Annual reports/10Ks sometimes have them, sometimes don't. Another way is to search the internet for the company's homepage. Another way is to use a phone cd-rom product (faster than using the internet search engines). Another way is to run a D&B investigation - sometimes they have the plants listed. Another way is to look at news articles about the company. From all of these and several others - you MAY be able to piece together most/all/none of the plant locations. But don't forget - some companies have their plants under different names than the parent company! Edited on September 23, 2005 |
