Here is a short summary of the responses to my query - 

The best suggestion was for the Northern Lights Alert service (thanks Gary D. Price, MLIS George Washington University). They are beta-testing still but it seems very promising. The e-mail does not include summaries or headlines, only links, nor does it sound like they will add this feature.

Newspage is working out as well - but the topic choices provided are very somewhat limiting. The e-mail includes article summaries as well as headlines.

Someone else suggested Infobeat. It is a really general service. 

Netscape's In-Box Direct is also good for general information as they have a number of different industries and newsletters to choose from.
