A taxonomy community of practice

April, 2000

This month representatives from ten companies met at the B.F. Goodrich Advanced Technology facility in Brecksville, Ohio, to explore the formation of a taxonomy-related Community of Practice. Eight of the companies were high technology businesses employing thousands of scientists and engineers. One was a Big 5 auditing firm. Another was an Internet consultancy based in Dublin, Ireland.

Group members enthusiastically exchanged  ideas and experiences and decided it would be worthwhile to continue the process through:

  • creation of a Knowledge Base on the Web;

  • periodic teleconferences and occasional face-to-face meetings;

  • collaboration on certain "deliverables," such as a technology review, a high-level briefing on the strategic impact of classification investments, or a training course for subject matter "knowledge stewards."
