Many of our members are wondering whether it’s possible to use Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) as the search function for both their intranet and public Web sites. With an improved set of features, tight integration with Microsoft Office programs, and low cost, MOSS 2007 is viewed as a possible contender against stand-alone search engines like Autonomy and Google. The trouble is, it's an apples-to-oranges comparison, since MOSS 2007 is a search system, while the others are search engines. In this article, we explain the difference between the two, tell why it matters, and look at how this impacts SharePoint implementation.
