Smith, a diversified technology-based manufacturing company, Judy Sayrs is developing knowledge base building blocks such as "communities of practice", training for information "gatekeepers", an intranet-based "virtual library," and a knowledge "map" that helps people locate internal information.

Judy Sayrs is a Knowledge Consultant for A. O. Smith , a diversified technology-based manufacturing company based in Milwaukee. Formerly a senior information specialist, Judy's knowledge management role began to emerge in 1995, when the company began to downsize. Then in 1997 the company sold its automotive frames and components business, which represented 51% of revenues. As a result, management began to seek ways to preserve the know how of employees leaving the firm.
