Organizing information services for R&D

Since 1990, many R&D-intensive companies have reorganized the information services (IS) functions that support research. This article outlines what new forms of organization are being implemented, why these changes are occurring, and how well they are working. Our findings are based on research conducted in the summer of 1996 to answer the question, "Can new forms of organization improve the quality of information services available to R & D
