Integrating taxonomies in the state of Minnesota
October, 2002
In this article Eileen Quam, Information Architect for the State of Minnesota’s North Star Portal, discusses the methods and tools she used to develop a taxonomy to integrate information from 13 state agencies.
The process involved the following steps:
1. Developing a vocabulary to describe the content. 2. Selecting and modifying a metadata standard to ensure interoperability. 3. Implementing the taxonomy in a search engine and other applications.
Products used in the project were the Inktomi search engine, Content Classification Engine, and Classifier (formerly Quiver) as well as TagGen and Broadvision. Standards included Dublin Core and the Legislative Indexing Vocabulary.
