Knowledge base editor profile

September, 1998

A librarian plus a staff of M.B.A.'s and communications professionals run an intellectual capital logistics operation that helps "content owners" publish their know-how. The group edits and delivers business intelligence to help the firm's practitioners and consultants around the world solve client problems.

To expedite delivery and minimize costs, the group uses "containers" -- standardized Lotus Notes databases or Web sites -- for its intellectual assets. Just as the Federal Express logistics system moves physical goods by means of drivers, trucks, planes, and airports, the intellectual capital logistics group moves information by means of a telecommunications network, computers, databases, software, documentation, and training.

The group helps content "owners" select the right knowledge base ("container") for their work and then manage the process of deploying it throughout the firm. Deploying (publishing) involves not only adding content but also testing, promoting, preparing documentation, training other staff members to use it, and tracking usage.
