Computer assisted tagging at Lucent

May, 2001

This article describes Lucent's use of predefined searches to tag news stories and internal documents with terms from a specialized vocabulary. The process uses a database containing information about each term, including search strings customized for major news services. An internally developed program uses the search strings to query commercial databases and assign subject terms to stories. Human editors review the program's output and approve the results for use in a variety of applications, such as internal newsletters.

Includes screen shots and sample database record.

  • In 1999, IDC reported that Fortune 500 companies lose about $12 billion a year because of intellectual rework and the inability to find knowledge resources.
  • InformationWeek reported that 58% of most corporations' knowledge assets and intellectual property data is not being captured for use by its strategic planning, research, marketing and sales organizations.
