Corporate use of blogs

November, 2003

The question
A Society member is wondering whether anyone is using Web logs (blogs) or RSS news feeds to publish corporate information.

What's a Blog?
A blog (short for web log) is a online diary — a personal Web site updated daily or more frequently with news, links, and personal comments. As an example, see Knowledge Problem, one of the top five business blogs according to Forbes magazine. The diary entries are listed, most recent ones first, on the right side of the screen. After each entry is a link that allows readers to post a comment.

Blog are popular because they're an easy way for nontechnical people to create and update a personal web site. There are two kinds of blogs:

  • personal diaries like "Knowledge Problem;"
  • news services that target a readership with a shared interest.
